Dublin City Council to build pre-fabricated apartment blocks in the city centre in an effort to tackle the current housing and homeless crisis

In a bid to tackle the ongoing housing and homeless crisis it has been revealed that Dublin City Council are considering building pre-fabricated apartment blocks in the city centre.

According to reports the council want to build at least 100 “modular” apartments on two sites (yet to be chosen) in the city for what it calls a “volumetric build” project, which will involve “stacking” factory-built housing units to form apartment blocks.

Meanwhile the city council also confirmed they are currently assessing three other sites in suburban Dublin, at Coolock, Ballyfermot and Finglas for the next phase of standard two storey modular housing.

The move comes as a similar project was undertaken in the UK by Lewisham Borough Council in South London, who made news by providing a modern modular apartment complex which subsequently provided 24 homes for families living in emergency accommodation.
