Early General Election on the cards as Fianna Fáil call on the Tánaiste to resign

The current Tánaiste’s career is hanging in the balance this morning and it could be over as soon as Tuesday if Fianna Fáil have their way.

Ms Fitzgerald who is said to be hanging on by her finger nails has left the current Fine Gael led government in an awkward situation in recent weeks following her alleged involvement in the Maurice McCabe whistle-blower fiasco.

It is understood the Government’s main opposition Fianna Fáil are set to submit a motion later this morning which will declare they have no confidence in Ms Fitzgerald’s ability to fulfil her duties as Tánaiste.

Although the former Minister for Justice has received public backing from her party she could soon be set to pay the price as her position has been put into question.

Fianna Fáil have apparently given a deadline of next Tuesday for Ms Fitzgerald to tender her resignation which looks likely to be accepted as Fine Gael will look to block an early general election.

If Ms Fitzgerald does decide to tender her resignation the country could soon see an election by December as the Government will fall.

The resignation will also see both Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil looking to take advantage of the situation which would result in a major collapse for Fine Gael.

The call for Ms Fitzgerald’s resignation comes after recent allegations suggests that she knew about the garda’ plans in dealing with the scandal.
