Online auction giant eBay has announced that it will cut 2,400 jobs worldwide ahead of the company’s plans to split its marketplace and payments businesses. These cuts will represent about seven percent of the company’s global workforce.

eBay and its payments partner, Paypal, will soon become separate entities. eBay acquired Paypal way back in 2002.

2,500 staff are employed by the eBay/Paypal consortium in Dublin and Dundalk, but it is unclear at this point whether or not the Irish operation will be affected by the job cuts.

The jobs will be shed over the next few months.
