Eir customers warned about new scam that tricks users into downloading a file that infects their computer with malware that holds them to ransom

Eir customers have been urged not to open or respond to any suspicious emails they recieve as the telecommunications comapny has become the subject of a fake email scam.

The warning comes after a number of customers said they received the email which contains dangerous malware that infects a users computer.

It is understood the harmful and sophisticated virus which locks a users files and folders in exchange for a ransom demand, occurs when a customer is tricked into downloading a zip folder which is said to contain an invoice of their latest bill.

However rather than downloading the folder a user is actually downloading a heavily coded JavaScript file which is designed to install software that purposely locks files and folders whilst scanning for personal information.

In a response to the latest scam Eir are urging customers not to open any suspicious emails or download any documents but instead report them to their email account provider before marking them as spam and deleting them.
