End Two Tier Tax System: Thousands of people sign new petition calling on the Government to change Motor Tax laws

Everyone knows running a car can be quite expensive with high insurance premiums and fuel costs let alone the ridiculously overpriced road tax. Well now it seems the humble Irish motorist is calling for a change in motor tax rates after thousands of people signed a petition calling on the current two tier tax system to be changed.

The call has come from a high number of motorists who currently own vehicles registered before 2008 because they feel they are being unfairly charged more. Angry motorists say that all pre 2008 vehicles are being taxed based on their engine size, whilst cars registered after 2008 are taxed on the vehicle’s emission rating.

Motorists say the system is completely unfair due to their environmental admissions not being accounted for which results in them being significantly charged higher tax rates. It is understood over 14,000 people have already signed the petition calling on the “unfair, two-tier tax law” to be changed.

The group behind the petition also highlight the fact that a significant amount of money is being generated from motor tax and is used to fund Irish Water.
