EU to sanction Italy for defying Brussel’s order and rolling back austerity

The EU has moved to punish Italy for rolling back austerity imposed on the country by its former Brussel’s appointed government.

CNBC reports that the populist coalition in Rome want to increase welfare and public infrastructure expenditure, something the government says is vital after a bridge collapse earlier this year that killed 30 people.

The EU commission released this statement in response to Italy’s defiance

“With regret, that today we confirm our assessment that Italy’s draft budget plan is in particularly serious non-compliance with the Council recommendation of 13 July.”

Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini has said that the country’s 2019 budget is “non-negotiable”.
