Eurovision producer slammed after he claimed the late Terry Wogan ruined the contest for the British public

There has been widespread outpour of comments on social media this afternoon after the lead producer o this year’s Eurovision Song Contest rather distastefully accused the late broadcasting legend Terry Wogan of ruining the competition with his commentaries for the BBC.

The man at the centre of the storm Christer Bjorkman, who will put on next month’s show in Stockholm, made his remarks during a recent Q&A event in London on which foucused on the competition’s past and future. When asked why did he think the British public fell out of love with the contest, Bjoorman said: “There are several reasons, one is Terry Wogan himself,” Bjorkman said, in comments first reported by the Mirror.

“He did this for 28 years and his commentary always forced the mockery side and there is a grown-up generation in Britain that doesn’t know anything better. “He raised a generation of viewers believing this was a fun kitsch show that had no relevance whatsoever. “It totally spoiled Eurovision. Because of what Terry Wogan did, the UK don’t put in their best efforts.

He added: “But it’s the BBC who wanted him and let him, they did not stop him. He did his best and he did what he did very well, make fun of something, but if I would have been in charge I would never have chosen him.” Mr Bjorkman however has recieved widespread criticism from the British and Irish public who say his comments are extremely distasteful given the fact the beloved broadcaster only died in January of this year.
