Facebook and Instagram went down all over the world this morning in what is suspected to be a hacking attack. The world’s leading social network and the popular photo sharing site were inaccessible to users less than an hour ago.
As the most popular online service for connecting people, Facebook is an obvious target for any would-be hackers. The amount of personal information shared on Facebook has worried some analysts in the past but since much of this information is already public, it is unclear what purpose hacking the site would have.
Hacking is a major privacy concern. Hackers accessed hundreds of nude photographs of celebrities late last year and posted them publicly on the internet. The photos were taken from private mobile phones, however, and not social networks.
