Facebook confirm they are to introduce new suicide prevention tool

According to recent reports the world’s biggest social media networking website Facebook have created a new series of tools for its users to notify the company if they see a Facebook friend showing worrying behaviour.

It is understood the tools have been built with the help of Samaritans and will allow users to perform a number of specific actions. The social networking website says a user will be able to report worrying content, about a fellow user who posted it, the report to will then prompt Facebook to send a notification to the distressed individual asking them if they need help from a friend or a confidential phone or chat service. They also say any explicit threats of suicide reported will result in emergency services numbers being given to both users.

The new potentially life saving feature was revealed by the companies Head of Safety, Julie De Baillencourt who said:”We worked with organisations including Samaritans to develop these tools, and one of the first things they told us was how much connecting with people who care can help those who are struggling to cope – whether offline or online.
