Fair play: Facebook are writing code that will help detect if someone is posting suicidal posts

Facebook has unleashed a very powerful tool with Facebook Live, but unfortunately it has seen some nasty instances where people have been killed live on air.

The king of social media is now releasing a new artificial intelligent program that will detect if users are posting suicidal messages and will watch their friends’ responses to such statuses.

It’ll also have an immediate go-to button for Facebook Live in case the person needs help and will direct assistance to them.

Lynsey Pollard of the Samaritans charity said: “It’s great that Facebook are showing such commitment to keeping people safe online.
“Samaritans was involved in the consultation for their UK safety features and we would hope to have the same involvement if they bring this latest development to the UK.”

The code is being rolled out in the United States first but will reach Ireland and the UK by the summer.
