Family planning: Government passes new legislation that will see funding being provided to couples who seek IVF treatment options

There was good news for couples trying to conceive today as the Government formally approved a new legislation that will see the state provide funding to help cover the cost of treatments such as IVF.

The latest legislation which is the first of its kind in the history of the state, was announced earlier this evening by the Minister for Health Simon Harris who said the funding will actively help those wishing to start a family.

Although the new legislation has to go before an Oireachtas committee later this year, Mr Harris said he hoped the new Bill will be passed without any opposition and come into effect early next year.

The news of the latest legislation has been welcomed by family planning agencies across the country who say the Mr Harris’s announcement will come as relief to most couples who desperately want to start a family.

According to latest figures fertilisation options such as IVF can cost in the region of €4,500 to €6,000.
