Fianna Fáil have revealed that they will not support the latest sex education Bill that has been brought forward to the Dáil.

The shock announcement by the party, comes after the new Bill which will allow for the change to the current sexual education curriculum in Irish schools, was debated in the Dáil on Wednesday evening.

According to RTÉ News, the party who are the main party supporting the Fine Gael led minority government, have declined to support the Bill even though they agree reforms are needed for the improvement of sexual education in Irish schools.

In announcement made last night the party’s Education Spokesman Thomas Byrne, said the party had a principle objection in that Ireland had never legislated for a curriculum in regards to the issue.

Mr Byrne also stated that he believed that given there was no legislation, it would be a bad precedent to support the passage of the Bill.

Fiann Fáil’s decision was made after a number of TD’s in favour of the new Bill agreed that the current sexual education curriculum in Irish schools is outdated and lacked key information on a number of key topics when it comes to relationships in modern day Ireland.
