Fianna Fáil TD Michael McGrath calls on the Government to lower taxes in the next budget

A leading Fianna Fáil TD has slammed the government for not lowering taxes and has claimed the coalition should seriously consider giving the Irish working people a break by cutting their taxes in the Budget.

Fianna Fáil’s Michael McGrath made his comments after the latest Exchequer returns revealed that the public finances are around €4 billion better off than last year. The latest report reveals that almost every tax category has made significantly higher returns, although corporation tax is the only area were the government has a shortfall.

The latest figures has prompted Mr McGrath to call for significant tax cuts on behalf of workers, saying they are carrying an unfair burden, Mr McGrath said: “The amount of income tax being collected today is about 1/3 greater than it was in 2007 and under all of the other tax heads, the amount of tax being collected is less than it was in 2007.”
