FIFA World Cup: Sweden end Switzerland dream to book their place in the last eight

Sweden have set up a last eight tie after they beat Switzerland 1-0 this afternoon.

The Swedes who have made the quarter finals for the first time since 1994, have Erik Forsberg to thank as his 66th minute strike determined the result of the tie.

In a game that was never expected to excite, it lived to its billing as both sides played a cagey game with one moment proving to be defying.

Although both sides looked to break on the counter attack, it was Sweden who had the most chances in the first half and they were unlucky not to have taken the lead at the break.

The second half seen both sides pick up the tempo and Sweden deservedly took the lead when Forsberg’s shot from the edge of the box deflected past a stranded Sommer.

Switzerland who are known to grab late goals pushed for a much needed equaliser and Seferovic could have drawn the sides level but only for a great save by Olsen.

The game was effectively ended when the Swiss who were pushing hard for an equaliser, had Lang sent off after he hauled down Olsson who was one on one with Sommer.

Although the foul appeared to be inside the box, it was correctly deemed a free kick after a VAR review.

Sweden held on and they will now play either England or Colombia for a place in the last four.
