An Indian woman is going to great lengths in order for the country’s government to change its laws and introduce stricter punishment for those guilty of rape and sexual assault.

The woman at the centre of the remarkable story Swati Maliwal, the chairwomen of Delhi’s Commission for Women, is holding an indefinite hunger strike in order for the country’s leaders to take heed.

Ms Maliwal who is campaigning for stricter sentences including the death penalty for rapists, begun the strike on April 13th in temperatures of 37c, and has already gained the support of not only the Delhi public but women’s and children’s rights campaigners across the globe.

The devoted woman’s hunger strike has already seen hundreds of protestors take to the streets in Delhi and across India who have also called for stricter punishment when it comes to rape and sexual assault.

It is believed Ms Maliwal who has staged her hunger strike at Rajghat (a memorial for Mahatma Gandhi), began her strike after two innocent young girls aged 8 and 16 were allegedly gang raped and murdered earlier this month.

The woman’s rights campaigner hopes that her brave efforts will persuade India’s Government to review its current laws and enforce the right changes.
