Fine Fry: Gardai confirm they received a blasphemy complaint over Stephen Fry’s interview

Gardai have confirmed that a gentleman made an official blasphemy complaint against TV personality Stephen Fry over this comments on Gay Byrne’s The Meaning of Life show.

They have not made any further comment on the situation but if convicted, Fry could be looking at a €25,000 fine for his comments.

The show saw the actor interviewed in February 2015 by Gay Byrne on RTE’s “Meaning of life” show which generally talks about people’s religious beliefs and what they believe in now.

Byrne’s usual last question is what people would say when they meet St Peter at the gates of Heaven.
A visibly angry, agressive and agitated Fry replied with:
“he would quiz a mean-minded God”
“How dare you create a world in which there is such misery that is not our fault? It’s not right.”
“Why should I respect a capricious, mean-minded, stupid God who creates a world which is so full of injustice and pain?

As Fry’s eyes got bigger and redder, he continued:
“Because the God who created this universe, if it was created by God, is quite clearly a maniac, utter maniac. Totally selfish.

“We have to spend our life on our knees thanking him; what kind of God would do that?”

The public are now awaiting the next stage of this complaint whether it will escalate.
