Fine Gael refuse to support water charges committee’s recommendation report claiming ‘its illegal’

There is a strong possibility that the much hated water charges will be scrapped once and for all later today, but the Fine Gael party have said they won’t be voting in favour of the water committee’s report on water charges.

The party have said it would be wrong to approve the committees recommendations as it would be illegal.

The party’s brash announcement comes after a day of debating in the Dáil yesterday. The party also say the latest recomendations fall well short of Ireland’s obligations under the EU Water Framework Directive.

Speaking last night a party spokesperson said: “Ultimately, we cannot stand over a politically expedient report that is misleading to the public and ignores the serious consequences for Ireland.”

The spokesperson also claimed the unreasonable recommendations will leave Ireland in direct violation of EU law and will leave the state facing tens of millions in fines.
