Fine Gael TD claims the party and Enda Kenny should be very proud of themselves after they negotiated a deal with Fianna Fáil to form a minority Government

Fine Gael TD has received public backlash after she claimed that the acting Taoiseach Enda Kenny and the party should be proud of themselves after they negotiated a deal with Fianna Fáil to form a minority Government.

The TD at the centre of the storm Regina Doherty claimed Mr Kenny leadership to agree a compromise with arch rivals Fianna Fail by suspending water charges for at least nine months. The Fine Gael TD also claimed the deal showed that Fine Gael was not willing to take power at any price.

Ms Doherty told reporters outside the Dail the Taoiseach and the party should be very proud of how the discussions had gone: “It’s nothing to do with power,” she said. “The very night we knew the Dáil arithmetic was going to be odd to say the least, (Enda Kenny) was the first person to stand up to say he took the responsibility to form a government.”

Before adding: “There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be in government.”
