According to reports released last night it is believed that Fine Gael’s Seanad by-election candidate John McNulty has agreed to resign the seat if he wins when the result is announced today.

Mr McNulty has already strongly called on fellow TDs and Senators not to vote for him, but it is understood that his withdrawal from the race had come too late as the ballot papers had already been printed.

Candidate McNulty became embroiled in controversy recently as it was revealed that he was appointed to a state board that he would have to resign from if elected.

Mr McNulty effectively withdrew from the race, but its thought that the ballot papers were already printed with his name and some were even returned.

It has now been all but confirmed that Mr McNulty will resign the seat if he is declared the winner in this afternoons result, the decision comes after numerous meetings with fellow Fine Gael party officials earlier this week.

It is understood that following Mr McNulty’s resignation a fresh by-election will be held meaning Fine Gael will be able to put forward a new candidate who is favorite to win because of the Government numbers, therefore restoring the coalition’s majority in the upper house.
