Finian McGrath vows to quit Dáil unless a fresh inquiry into the Stardust tragedy is launched

The Dáil are split in their decision to start a fresh inquiry into the Stardust tragedy or not. Fine Gael said there is not enough new evidence to warrant another inquiry.

However, Super Junior Minister Finian McGrath is firm in his stance saying he will quit the Dáil if a new inquiry into the tragedy is not agreed on.

The Stardust tragedy occurred in 1981 in Artane, when forty-eight young people lost their lives in a fire at the nightclub. The previous Tribunal found that the blaze was “probably” deliberate.

Relatives of those who died in the Valentine’s Day tragedy have fought for closure for over 30 years.

Speaking to the Irish Examiner, six ministers confirmed that Stardust was the main topic of their weekly meeting.

They said Mr McGrath was “not for turning” and is ready to quit Government if satisfactory action isn’t taken. The row between ministers on the topic was “tense, difficult, hot and heavy”.
