Four men and a woman are scheduled to appear before Mallow District Court this morning after gardai were pelted with stones in East Cork last night.
It is believed that two gardai on duty stopped a car near Killeagh just after midnight and were attacked by a group of people. Its understood that a garda sergeant was hit on the head with a rock and sustained a serious facial injury and his colleague suffered cuts when he was hit with stones.
The vehicle was pursued by another garda patrol car to Dungourney where gardai again came under attack.
Gardai say five people were arrested and taken to various garda stations across Cork. Gardai also seized a number of weapons, a car and an amount of cash.
