Food recall alert: Tesco recall cheese product after tests find traces of Listeria bug – which is known to cause meningitis

Tesco Ireland have confirmed that they recalled one of its cheese products from their stores after tests found they contain Listeria.

Tesco Ireland say the recall comes after a number of tests carried out by the Food Safety Authority found that there was traces of Listeria in their own brand ‘Tesco Cheeses of Ireland Wicklow Blue’ cheese.

The company revealed the recall was necessary given that the bug can cause serious illness – and could even cause meningitis.

It is widely known that Listeria monocytogenes, can cause high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, nausea and diarrhea, it also known that the bug can lead to rare cases of meningitis.

Tesco say the packets affected are the 120g weight versions, with a use by dates of February 23 and February 25, 2017.

Meanwhile the Food Safety Authority of Ireland have issued a statement, which reads as follows: “As a precautionary measure, Tesco is recalling the above batches of Tesco Cheeses of Ireland Wicklow Blue, due to the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes.”

“Tesco is issuing point of sale recall notices requesting customers who have bought an implicated batch to return it to their store.”
