Oskar Groening, a former SS guard at Auschwitz, has passed away aged 96.
Groening, known as ‘the Bookkeeper of Auschwitz’, was due to begin a four-year prison sentence for being an accessory to murder at the death camp.
Groening, who reportedly carried out administrative duties at the facility, had claimed that while he had witnessed atrocities and he felt ‘moral guilt’, he had not actively participated on any crime.
One of Groening’s duties reportedly was to sort out valuables and cash seized from the Jewish population, before the items were sent to Berlin.
Groening passed away in hospital on Friday.
