There was further controversy last night as members of the Gardaí were called in to clear protesters away from Tanaiste Joan Burton’s car in order to allow her leave a public meeting in Dublin.
It is understood that a small number of protestors gathered to block the Tanaiste’s car after a referendum meeting in Whitehall in North Dublin last night, Gardai were called to intervene in order to allow the car to leave. Gardai say around 30 protestors then engaged in a brief standoff with them which resulted in them being unable to leave the scene.
The protesters gathered as the Tanaiste Joan Burton was attending a meeting discussing the upcoming marriage equality referendum. Gardai say no one was injured in the protests.
