Gardai appeal for people to take extra care this morning with roads and footpaths described as “treacherous, dangerous and impassable” as snow and ice take hold in many counties

Galway, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Leitrim, Roscommon and parts of Louth all experienced snow last night.

Some areas of Cavan are said to be literally impassable this morning as treacherous conditions have forced the closure of many schools in the county.

Gardaí are asking motorists to take extreme care on all roads, even main roads.Temperatures are due to plummet to below minus two degrees tonight as the freezing conditions continue. Gerry Murphy from Met Eireann has the outlook for tonight is freezing with more snow forecast.
