Gardaí in Co Laois man have arrested a man following an armed robbery in Mountrath in the early hours of this morning.
According to reports the man who is being treated in hospital following two crashes, entered the Emo Filling Station arned with a firearm in Mountrath at approximately 12.25am this morning.
It is then believed held threatened a staff member before fleeing the scene with a quantity of cash.
However the armed man didn’t manage to completely get away as he crashed his getaway car about 10 minutes later outside a house at Derrykearn, near Abbeyleix.
He then threatened the occupants of the house went out to investigate, before stealing their car which he then crashed into a tree around 1.5km from the Derrykearn scene.
Gardaí say the man who is aged in his 30s, was arrested and a firearm was discovered nearby after a search of the area.
He was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital at Tullamore for treatment where his current condition is described as serious.
