Gardai have begun excavating a three acre site in area of Dublin woodland as part of their investigation into the disappearance of missing man Trevor Deely.

The search for Mr Deely who went missing almost 17 years ago officially began on Saturday after detectives received new information.

Gardaí say an area at Chapelizod was cleared over the weekend and excavation work officially began.

Mr Deely, from Naas in Co Kildare, was 22 when he went missing while walking home in south Dublin following a Christmas party in December 2000.

Gardaí say Mr Deely could have been killed by a well known criminal whom he may have met by chance in the Baggot Street area on the night of his disappearance.
