Gardai have arrested two men over the weekend after a number of weapons were found in an operation targeting dissident republicans in Dublin.

Gardai say the searches were carried out as part of an ongoing intelligence-led investigation by the Garda Crime and Security section and the Special Detective Unit. It is thought that properties in the Ballymun, East Wall and the Cloghran areas of Dublin were searched. Gardai confirmed that two men in their 50s were arrested in relation to the operation and that a number of semi automatic pistols, a sawn-off shotgun and an AK-47 assault rifle were discovered as part of the search.

They also confirmed that they discovered what appeared to be bomb-making material at one of the locations. The assistance of the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called in order to render the area safe. It is understood that a controlled explosion was also carried out. The scenes have since been examined by the Garda Technical Bureau. Gardai say that this current operation was the latest in a number of seizures and arrests against dissident republicans this year.
