Darren Hughes-Gibson aged 17 was found dead at Stephenstown Industrial Estate in Balbriggan, , Dublin on August 23, 2012. His mother, Elaine Hughes, had reported him missing after he failed to return to their home at New Haven Bay in Balbriggan the night before.

The Dublin Coroner’s Court heard that gardaí are now investigating the allegations of harassment of Darren prior to his death which included Facebook messages to do with the boys colour and a hearing aid he used. His mother had told the inquest that she believes he took his own life because of the constant abuse the boy got online and via text message

“I feel if it were not for those messages, he would still be here” Ms Hughes said.

Gardai claimed that they had been liaising with the FBI on retrieving the messages from Facebook but the company was not co-operating.

Garda headquarters will forward a request to gain access to Darren’s Facebook account to the American authorities who will then take it to Facebook.
