Gardai warn public to be on alert remote locking scam that has seen cars stolen in the Midlands

Gardai have issued a warning to motorists across the country after ruthless thieves have devised a plan to steal vehicles using signal blockers.

The warning comes after a number of residents in the Golden Island area of Athlone Co Westmeath have had their cars stolen when the vandals used signal blockers whilst they were locking their car.

The sophisticated scam works when the thieves lurk nearby and activate the blocking system which then prevents an owner from locking their car by remote control.

Gardai say the scam is becoming more common as it gives easy access to modern cars as the would be thieves can easily slip in and start the car whilst the owner isn’t aware.
