General Election a real possibility now as Fianna Fail will back no confidence motion in Tanaiste Frances Fitzgerald

Fianna Fail looks set to back Sinn Fein’s motion of no confidence in the Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald next Wednesday.

The motion of no confidence stems from revelations that then Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald knew of the strategy employed by former Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan’s legal team to attack the character and integrity of Garda whistle-blower since at least April 2015.

Leo Varadkar had in the Dáil that Fitzgerald knew of this until it became public, which is why she did not challenge it; however, those remarks were later shown to be incorrect.

The stability of the government itself has also now been brought into question.
