Genoa bridge collapse: At least 11 people dead after major bridge breaks apart in rough weather

At least 11 people are now confirmed dead after the collapse of a major bridge in the Italian city of Genoa.

No less than 20 vehicles were trapped when a 200-metre section of the Morandi Bridge collapsed earlier today.

The Morandi bridge spans over a major road, shopping and housing areas. The structure was finished in 1968, and had reportedly undergone renovation works in 2016.

The causes of the collapse are not immediately clear but bad weather is thought to be a factor. A violent storm hit the area around the time of the incident.
