German Minister suggests “voluntary colonialism” could stop migration from Africa to Europe and save Africa

In an interview with the BBC, Germany’s Minister for Africa, Gunter Nooke, has suggested that the EU and other Western nations acquire land in Africa and build “colonial cities” to stem migration.

As Africa’s population continues to dramatically increase over the coming decades migration into Europe is likely to reach tens of millions.

This controversial proposal referred to as “voluntary colonialism” would see Western nations build modern cities that would then be populated by Africans, but the complex infrastructure would be run by Europeans. Control would gradually be handed over to Africans.

However, critics have suggested that the infrastructure build by Westerns would just as quickly go to wrack and ruin under African control as did the infrastructure left behind when European powers ended their previous colonial ventures on the continent.

The proposal has also been rejected by anti-colonial activists and academics but Carol Musyoka, an academic at one of Kenya’s top Universities, Strathmore Business School, has called the idea “fascinating”.
