Germany have been crowned the 2014 FIFA World Cup champions tonight, after beating Argentina 1-0 after extra time. The winning goal which was scored by second half substitute Mario Gotze came on the113th minute, the goal came after a German attack down the left hand side with André Schürrle picking up the ball and running at the Argentinian defense before he pulled a sublime cross for Gotze to take on his chest and place the ball past Sergio Romero the Argentine goalkeeper.

The match was an evenly contested affair over the course of the 90 minutes with both sides having an equal share of possession. Both teams had numerous chances to take the lead in the first half. Argentina would have considered them selves unlucky after Gonzalo Higuain had a glorious chance to put Argentina ahead when he received the ball from a poor Toni Kroos pass back but he was unable to convert. Germany had chances of their own with Benedikt Höwedes having the best of them on the stroke of half time with his header from a Kroos corner hitting the post.

The second half was more a defensive affair with both teams playing a counter attacking game, Argentina had a penalty claim denied when Higuain collided with Manuel Neuer but the referee gave the decision to Germany as a free Kick. The match came to stalemate after the 90 minutes with both teams happy to accept extra time.

Extra time began much the same as the second half with both teams looking to counter, with Germany looking more likely to score as an ever reliant Lionel Messi tired, with the match looking set for penalties, the decisive moment came on the 113th minute as Gotze collected the ball from Schürrle’s cross and Slotted the ball past Sergio Romero. Germany held on to win their fourth World Cup after appearing in eight finals.
