Germany’s “women only safe zones” set up to guard against rape and sexual assault that has blighted most of the countries major celebrations over the last few years, failed to protect New Year’s Eve revellers in several cities.
Police in the capital Berlin and Cologne arrested several men on suspicion of sexual assault.
Germany has seen an explosion of sexual assault and rape of German women and girls since Angela Merkel’s decision to open the country’s borders to million of North African and Middle Eastern migrants.
Open border advocates and politicians in the country have stated that German women and girls will simply have tolerate the greater risk of assault for the sake of diversity.
