A huge gold-painted statue of communist founding father Chairman Mao has been erected in the countryside in the central province of Henan. The statue, cost three million yuan to build. Chairman Mao controlled China for three decades.

It took nine months to build, stands 37 metres tall and was paid for by a group of regional businessmen. The statue overlooks empty fields.

Some are less than happy about the statue, especially since it has been positioned in the centre of the region worst hit by famine in the late 1950s. It is believed as many as 40 million people died as a result of Mao’s economic policies at that time.

“Have you forgotten about the Great Famine, building that?” one person posted on Chinese social media site Sina Weibo.
