There was good news for carers this week as the Minister for Health Simon Harris announced that all those receiving Carers Allowance will be entitled to a free GP Card.
The news which announced as part of package that will see a further €10m spent on respite care will now mean those who dedicate their time to look after the sick and the elderly will be entitled to the card.
Announcing the decision on Tuesday Minister Harris said it was only right that thousands of carers across the country will get the card as they also need support when they sick.
It is believed the new scheme will now mean those who receive the allowance will no longer have to go through an assessment process in order to avail of the card which provides free cover for GP visits.
