Good news for patients as the HSE confirms funding for nine new life-changing drugs

There was good news for patients recently after the HSE and the Department of Health confirmed that nine new life-changing drugs are to be made available later this year.

The news which has been welcomed by the Health Minister Simon Harris comes after a dispute arose between the Department of Health and HSE over funding.

Announcing their decision to supply the drugs which will include new treatments for cancer, heart disease and depression the HSE have said the drugs will be funded out of this years existing budget.

They also revealed that some of the treatments will be made available to patients by the end of September although others will have to go through the correct protocols that will ensure the safety of patients.

The news comes after a dispute erupted between the pair after the HSE claimed they did not have enough funding to provide the drugs.

However after an extensive review by the Department of Health quashed the Health Service Executive’s claims after it discovered there was more than enough funding available.

The HSE say the following drugs will be made available:

  • Erivedge for basal cell carcinoma
  • Brintellix for depression
  • Entresto for heart failure
  • Lynparza for ovarian cancer
  • Gazyvaro for follicular lymphoma
  • Entyvio for Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis
  • Opdivo for renal cell carcinoma
  • Opdivo for Hodgkin’s lymphoma
  • Otezla for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis
