There was good news for residents in the Midlands as the HSE confirmed that a new medical assessment unit will be purposely built at the Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise.
The new build comes after a HIQA report found a number of safety concerns at the hospital’s emergency department.
Although the initial report recommended that the hospital’s Emergency Department be down graded, that proposal has been shelved after the HSE decided to allocate the unit.
It is believed the new unit will provide cover for people with less serious and minor injuries.
