The Department of Housing have revealed today that they are to allocate €226m in funding to commercial construction sites that will be used to provide an extra 23k homes by 2021.

The news which was announced earlier today by the Minister for Housing Simon Coveney, will coincide with current housing plans although Mr Coveney did state that the vast majority of the funding will be used on new builds in Dublin and Cork.

Speaking about the allocation of funding Mr Coveney said the new builds will purposely contribute to tackling the current homelessness crisis within the country.

Mr Coveney said: “The delivery of these housing units will be in the billions in terms of private expenditure.”

“By targeted public expenditure in some cases picking up some of the cost of infrastructure, in other cases picking up all of it, we will see across 34 different projects very significant movement in terms of housing delivery on some very big sites.”
