Government confirms heavily contested Green bin charges will not come into effect

There was further good news for homeowners today as the Government have reversed their decision to to introduce mandatory minimum pay-by-weight charges for green bin waste.

The scandalous charges which were meant to be introduced as part of a new nationwide pay-by-weight system, but they were met strong opposition as a number of authorities and political parties opposed the charges because they claimed it would lead to illegal dumping and a reduction in recycling.

It is was thought that the government were in favour of introducing charges that would see homeowners paying 11c per kg for black bin waste, 6c for brown bin and 2c for green bin.

However the proposal was met with a stern response from opposition parties including the Green Party, People Before Profit/Anti-Austerity Alliance, Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin who say the charges would cause more hassle than they are worth.

The proposal was heavily criticised by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown councillors who unanimously voted in favour for it to be scrapped.
