The way you pay your TV licence fee could soon be set to change as the Government are considering plans to have the fee collected by private firms or the revenue commissioner.

According to The Irish Mirror newspaper, the new proposals being submitted by the Minister for Communications Dennis Naughten will see the current system of An Post collecting the fee being scrapped.

It is believed the Government are looking at ways to clamp down on licence fee evaders who are opting not to pay the fee annually.

Under the new proposals the current fee could be potentially collected by the revenue or by privatised companies who would bid for the contractual rights.

Although any plans have to be approved by the Dail, it is understood that the proposals are being heavily backed as current figures show 14.7% of licence fees are not being paid annually.
