Government considering proposals to introduce Child benefit payments for unmarried fathers

According to reports this morning the new Minister for Social Protection is seriously considering introducing new legislation that would see Child benefit being paid to unmarried fathers.

It is understood the Government is considering proposals that would see a change in the law that would see the payment no longer being made available to mothers but single fathers as well.

A spokesperson within the Dail said Mr Varadkar is currently looking at solutions that would see the monthly payment of €140 per child being made available to fathers or guardians of children.

The spokesperson added the changes are being considered as the roles in modern society are ever changing and there are a high number of struggling fathers as well as mothers in modern Ireland.
