According to various reports it is understood that the Government are currently drawing up proposals that will see penalty points being directly linked to a new register of licences.
It is believed that Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe wants the issue sorted out as quick as possible in order to stamp out any loopholes that would allow dangerous motorists get away with receiving any penalty points on their licence. The new scheme is being drawn up the Department of Transport along with the help of the Department of Justice.
The Transport Minister says under the new system motorists licences would be directly linked to their registration numbers, the move would then result in them being unable to avoid their punishment. Mr O’Donohoe also says the new system and would be available to the Courts Service, the Gardaí and the Road Safety Authority.
