Government extension talks get underway as both Leo Varadkar and Micheal Martin meet

Initial talks between the leaders of the country’s biggest political parties have gotten underway this week in the hope that the current confidence and supply agreement will be extended.

Although official talks are set to get underway next week, both the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Fianna Fáil leader Mícheál Martin met on Monday to discuss the prospect of renewing the current deal.

Following the meeting both party leaders said they are hopeful an agreement can be reached in the immediate future, but no official timeline has been agreed to complete the deal.

It is believed that the Taoiseach previously suggested that an agreement could be made before the Halloween break, however the Fianna Fáil leader has said niether he nor his party will be governed by timelines.

Both parties are expected hold a further discussions next week.
