The Government has finally announced two investigations into An Garda Síochána will be carried out after staggering revelations came out last week.

They also declared their confidence in Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan.

Last week figures revealed that almost 15,000 people who were prosecuted for road traffic offences are to have their convictions quashed as a result of a controversy over fixed charge notices and the exaggeration of garda breathalyser test figures by almost 1,000,000.

From 2011 to 2016 the number of drink-driving tests gardaí claimed to have carried out was hugely exaggerated, by almost 950,000.

It begs the question as to what else the gardai lied about to both the government and the public. The investigations, Enda Kenny said, will be thorough and carried out throughout the entire force.
