Government parties in disarray, after Enda Kenny confirms that the proposed rent cap may be scrapped if Fianna Fail does not toe the line

Government parties seem to fundamentally disagree on everything beyond raising their own pay packets, after Enda Kenny confirmed that the proposed rent cap may be scrapped altogether if Fianna Fail does not agree to implement it.

Fine Gael has proposed a 4% cap on any annual increase for rents, but their counterparts expressed reservations, asking instead for a 2% cap.

Both parties are profoundly pro-landlord anyway, so the entire rent cap issue may have been nothing but a ploy to convey the idea that the political forces are doing something that would help tenants, when in fact it may have been pre-ordained for Fianna Fail to disagree so that the cap they didn’t want to introduce anyway would be scrapped.

The Taoiseach has indeed said that the cap will not be lowered, and that it will not go ahead if Fianna Fail does not support the idea.
