Government say a small number of people are being monitored here in the wake of the Brussels terrorist attacks

According to various reports it is understood the Irish government are closely monitoring a small number of people living in Ireland after the horrific terrorist attacks in Brussels today.

However the Government have moved quickly to reassure the public by stating that an attack similar in nature is “highly unlikely” although we cannot consider ourselves “immune from the threat”. The government say members of the Gardaí are currently working closely with a number of EU and international intelligence agencies.

A government spokesperson issued statement on behalf of ministers earlier this afternoon, which said : “The activities of a small number of people based here and whose behaviour may be of concern will continue to be monitored closely.” The statement also said the recent events in Brussels were “deplorable” and they once again “highlighted the starkly threat from international terrorism”. I further explained: “Acts of violence like these are an attack on the democratic way of life that we in Ireland hold dear and the values that we share with our EU partners.”

Meanwhile the National Security Committee has held a meeting this afternoon to asses the risk to Ireland in the wake of the Brussels terror attacks. It is believed that the acting Taoiseach Enda Kenny called an emergency meeting of the committee as a matter or urgency. A spokesman for Mr Kenny said it was not aware of any increased threat here but the meeting was convened as “good practice”. “A significant security event has occurred in the EU.” The meeting is expected to end sometime this evening.
