Government set to give Christmas bonus payments to social welfare recipients in this year’s Budget

According to reports this afternoon it is understood the Government will be paying a Christmas bonus to social welfare recipients this year.

The news comes after RTE News say they have read a white paper document that outlines key public expenditure proposals for 2018.

It is understood the government plan on using a surplus in the social insurance fund for this year, and other resources to fund their spending which includes refunds for those who paid their water charges.

The document apparently also shows that working parents will receive an extra €2.45 per hour on top of their current wage.

However there is still debate amongst top TD’s in the Dáil over the much hated Universal Social Charge with many opposition TD’s calling for the charge to be scrapped.

Although it is believed Fine Gael are refusing to budge on the issue as the party are still sticking to their plans that will see the current threshold being raised to €33,800, which would ultimately result in workers being placed in the top 40% tax band before any cuts.
