The government has given its backing to proposed Sinn Fein Bill which will see 20 kilometre hour speed limit in certain residential areas.

Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe has said the government supports the principle of a 20 kilometre an hour speed limit where appropriate, and that an option of such a speed limit is set to be introduced. Although Mr Donohoe has suggested a pilot scheme to review the practicalities of the 20 kilometre an hour limit in certain areas but it will only be introduced if local authorities decide if it is necessary.

Meanwhile Minister Donohoe has paid tribute to the parents of 6-year-old Jake Brennan, who have been relentlessly campaigning for lower speed limits, since their young son was sadly knocked down and killed outside his home in Co Kilkenny last year.
